It’s Hip to Be Dull
Do you like watching wood warp? Are you disappointed that the Tupperware Museum in Kissemee, Florida has closed? Are you gearing up to celebrate National Fig Month? If the answer to any of these questions is “Uh, yeah, I guess so,? then you will probably appreciate (“enjoy? is too strong of a word) The Dull Men’s Club (DMC) web site. No women allowed (like we’d want to be part of this anyway). There is not much information (or any) about the origins of the club on the site, but according to a Reuters article, it was started by Lee Carlson, also known as Grover Click, “a semi-retired former tax accountant …with a few friends along the lines of gentlemen’s clubs in London and New York, to share common interests.?
Topics discussed include: airport carousels, dull things to do on vacation, park benches and tunnels. They also offer book reviews (i.e. “The Art of Napping?), links to favorite websites such as The History of Toothpicks and cringe-worthy corny jokes: “How do you make an egg roll?” Answer: “Push it.”
In keeping with the dull theme, the site could not be plainer. The background is lifeless gray with black letters and a non-imaginative linear layout. According to the site, the DMC is “A place — in cyberspace — where Dull Men can share thoughts and experiences, free from pressures to be in and trendy, free instead to enjoy the simple, ordinary things of everyday life.?
If this sounds like you (I’m sorry to hear that), then check it out.
